Is This As Good As It Gets?

Maybe you’ve not specifically asked yourself this question in a deep moment of contemplation, but I would dare to bet you’ve had the thought more than once in your life.

As Catholic women, we’re more than familiar with our need to offer prayer and sacrifice as part of our journey to sainthood.  If you were raised Catholic, you may have heard things like “offer it up” or “unite your suffering to the cross”.  These are definitely powerful, and absolutely necessary as we climb the mountain of holiness.

But lets be honest, it can be dangerous to think we must stay nailed to the cross.  That this is our lot in life.   Jesus did not stay nailed to the cross and neither should we.  Have we forgotten how the choices and decisions we make every day impact the life we get?

Jesus said, “I came so that you might have life and have it more abundantly” John 10:10

Yes, our lives will include pain and suffering.  This is the human experience.  But aren’t we also supposed to be living into our full potential of who God has called us to be?

Often, we don’t even know what that looks like.   We have a vague sense that there’s something more, that we aren’t meant to live in a constant state of stress, struggle, hopelessness.  Sadly, we seldom know how to achieve that.

I’m here to tell you, you are meant for more.  You are meant to live your life fully alive.

So how do you do this?

I believe the starting point is healing.  I know coaching is intended to be forward looking, result oriented, however, unless we can begin with healing those areas that are wounded, we cannot move forward in a way that is sustainable.

After healing, we move into awareness.  Awareness of your thoughts and beliefs about who you are and who God is.  Next, awareness of your thoughts about others and the world around you.

Once you are aware of your thoughts, you can decide how you want to move forward with them.  This is something you choose and will continue to choose daily.  Most of us have no idea that the story we tell ourselves (aka, our thoughts) are completely optional.  Understanding this idea is life changing.

Remember, you get to decide what you want your life to look like.  While God is the author and we can do nothing apart from him, he’s given us free will.  He wants us to fully engage our will and to use all the gifts we’ve been given.  The decisions we make determine our future – both here and in the next life.  God does not desire for us to sit idly by waiting for the life to happen to us.

Are you ready to take full responsibility for your future?
